Colombo
Arrival city, markets and temples
Sri Lanka's largest city and the usual first or last stop of a trip. Worth a day for its markets, temples and seafront, especially if you have a late flight.

About Colombo
Most visitors pass through Colombo on the way to or from Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), which is in Katunayake, about 35 km north of the city. A day is enough to see the main sights: the busy Pettah market streets, the Red Mosque, Gangaramaya Temple, Independence Square and the Galle Face Green promenade at sunset. Traffic is heavy at rush hour, so we plan the route around it.

Did you know?
Galle Face Green has been a public seafront promenade since 1859. Locals gather there at sunset to fly kites and eat street food.
