Who it suits: History lovers and first-time visitors. Expect early starts (Sigiriya is best climbed before 9am) and plenty of walking in the heat.
Day-by-day itinerary
Drive times are approximate. Every tour is private, so we can change the order, add rest days or extend it.
Day 1: Airport to Sigiriya
Pickup at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) and drive to Sigiriya, about 4 hours. Late afternoon visit to the Sigiriya Museum if time allows.
Day 2: Sigiriya Rock and village safari
Climb Sigiriya Rock early to beat the heat and the queues (allow 2-3 hours). In the afternoon, a village safari with a bullock-cart ride, lake canoe and traditional lunch.
Day 3: Polonnaruwa
Day trip to Polonnaruwa (about 1 hour each way), the 11th–12th century royal capital. The site is spread out, so many guests rent bicycles.
Day 4: Anuradhapura and Dambulla
Drive to Anuradhapura (about 1.5 hours) to see the Sri Maha Bodhi and the great stupas, then Dambulla Cave Temple on the way back.
Day 5: Return to the airport
Drive back to the airport (about 4 hours) or extend your trip to Kandy or the beach.
