A few years ago, Sri Lanka was in the news for its economic crisis. Things are very different now. Shops, fuel stations and hotels work normally, and the country welcomed a record number of visitors in 2025. But prices are moving again, and many guests ask us the same questions before they book: Is Sri Lanka expensive now? Is it safe to travel? How much cash do I need?
Here is a simple, honest update with the latest official numbers.
💵 The Rupee: Steady Through 2026
The Sri Lankan rupee (LKR) has been stable this year. Through September 2026 it traded at roughly 328 to 332 rupees to one US dollar. On October 8, the Central Bank's figures showed banks selling dollars at about Rs. 335 and buying at about Rs. 326.
What this means for you: your money goes about as far as it did at the start of the year. Exchange rates at banks and licensed money changers are fair, and the airport counters are fine for your first day.
📈 Prices: Inflation Is Back, but Modest for Visitors
After prices actually fell slightly in 2025, inflation has returned. The Central Bank reported 8.0% inflation in September 2026 (measured by the Colombo Consumer Price Index), the same as August and the highest level since mid-2023. Two big reasons:
- Fuel and transport: higher world oil prices, linked to tension in the Middle East, pushed transport costs up. Transport inflation was 16.3% in September.
- Food: food prices rose 8.7% compared with a year ago, with vegetables like onions among the main drivers.
What this means for you: local meals, tuk-tuk rides and entrance tickets cost a little more than last year, but Sri Lanka is still very good value compared with most beach and culture destinations in Asia. A rice and curry lunch at a local restaurant is still a few US dollars, and with us the daily rate for your vehicle and driver-guide is agreed before you travel, so it will not change during your trip.
🛂 Big Change: The Tourist ETA Is Free for 40 Countries
This is the best news for travellers this year. Since May 25, 2026, citizens of 40 countries can get a 30-day tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) free of charge. The list includes the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia, India, China, Japan and most of Europe.
A few things to know:
- You still need to apply for the ETA online before you fly. It is free, not "no visa".
- Apply only on the official website, eta.gov.lk. Some copycat sites charge high fees for the same form.
- If your country is not on the list, the online tourist ETA costs US$50 (US$20 for SAARC countries). Children under 12 get a free tourist ETA.
✈️ Visitor Numbers and Flights
Sri Lanka had a record 2.36 million visitors in 2025. In 2026, arrivals have been a little lower because of the conflict in the Middle East, which made some travellers nervous about flights through the Gulf. From January to September 2026, 1,693,679 tourists visited, with India, China, Australia, the UK and Germany the top markets in September.
What this means for you:
- Major airlines continue to fly to Colombo. Emirates, for example, runs three daily flights between Dubai and Colombo.
- Some European airlines have changed routes, so check your flight times and connections a few days before you travel.
- Fewer visitors means quieter sites and better hotel availability, especially in the shoulder season.
💳 Simple Money Tips for Sri Lanka
- Carry some cash. Cards work in hotels, supermarkets and larger restaurants, but small shops, tuk-tuks and temples are cash only.
- Use bank ATMs. They are easy to find in towns. Your bank may charge a fee, so take out larger amounts less often.
- Keep small notes. Rs. 100, 500 and 1,000 notes are the most useful. Many small vendors cannot change Rs. 5,000.
- Tourist prices exist. Foreigners pay a separate (higher) ticket price at national parks and heritage sites. This is official and normal.
- Agree prices first. For tuk-tuks without a meter, agree the fare before you get in, or use a ride app in Colombo and Kandy.
🧭 Is Now a Good Time to Visit?
Yes. Daily life is normal, the rupee is stable, the free ETA saves most visitors money, and quieter months mean a more relaxed trip. The main thing to watch is the price of fuel and food, which may keep rising slowly into 2027.
If you are planning a trip, our seasonal offers take up to 20% off the daily rate for your private vehicle and driver-guide, depending on your dates.
