For a small island, Sri Lanka has remarkable wildlife: leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and hundreds of bird species, often within a few hours' drive of the beach or the hill country. The question we hear most is not whether to do a safari, but which park to choose.

Most visitors pick between four national parks. Each has a different strength, a different best season and a different place on the map, so the right choice depends on what you want to see and where the rest of your trip goes.

🐾 The Four Main Parks at a Glance

UdawalaweElephants, all yearAll yearUdawalawe, between the hills and the south coast

WilpattuQuiet wilderness, leopards and bearsFebruary to OctoberAnuradhapura, north-west

🐆 Yala National Park: Best for Leopards

Yala is Sri Lanka's most famous park and has one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, especially in Block 1. You can also see elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer and a huge range of birds, with the Indian Ocean on the edge of the park.

Good to know:

  • Yala is the busiest park, and popular sightings can attract many jeeps. A patient driver who keeps a respectful distance makes a real difference.
  • Parts of the park close each year in the dry season. In 2026, Blocks 1 and 2 were closed from September 14 to October 15 because drought had dried up many waterholes, while other blocks stayed open. Always check the status before you book.
  • It fits naturally with the south coast, Ella or Kataragama.

🐘 Udawalawe National Park: Best for Elephants

If seeing wild elephants is your priority, Udawalawe is the most reliable park on the island. Its open grassland around a large reservoir makes herds easy to spot all year, including young calves.

Good to know:

  • Right next to the park is the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned elephant calves are cared for and later released back into the wild. Visitors can watch the feeding from a viewing area at set times.
  • Udawalawe is roughly halfway between the hill country and the south coast, so it is an easy stop between Ella and the beaches.
  • It is also a good choice when Yala is closed or crowded.

🌾 Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu: The Elephant Gathering

In the dry months, hundreds of elephants come to graze on the grass around the Minneriya reservoir as the water level drops. Known as "The Gathering", it is one of the largest meetings of Asian elephants anywhere. It usually happens from about July to October, with the biggest numbers in August and September.

Good to know:

  • The herds move between Minneriya, Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park depending on water and grass. Local jeep drivers know where they are each day, so it is best to decide on the morning.
  • These parks are close to Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa, so an afternoon safari fits easily into a Cultural Triangle Tour.

🌳 Wilpattu National Park: Best for a Quieter Safari

Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park, known for its natural lakes called villus, dense forest and far fewer jeeps than Yala. Leopards and sloth bears live here too, but sightings take more patience because the forest is thicker.

Good to know:

  • Wilpattu suits travellers who prefer peace and atmosphere over a long list of sightings, and those who have already been to Yala.
  • It is about an hour from Anuradhapura, so it works well at the start or end of a Cultural Triangle route.

💵 What a Safari Costs

A safari has two main costs, plus your transport to the park:

  1. Park entrance tickets. Foreign visitors pay a separate ticket price set in US dollars and paid in rupees at the gate, with service charge and VAT added on top. As of October 2026, expect roughly US$40 to 45 per adult at Yala and Udawalawe, with lower prices for children. Fees change from time to time, so we confirm them before you travel.
  2. Jeep hire. Safaris are done in open safari jeeps with a local driver. The jeep is paid per vehicle for a half or full day, and most hold up to six people, so the cost per person is lower for families and groups.

On our tours, park tickets and safari jeeps are paid separately from the daily rate for your vehicle and driver-guide. We book a trusted jeep driver and tell you the exact prices in advance, so there are no surprises at the gate.

⏰ Morning or Afternoon?

Parks generally open at 6 am and close at 6 pm. Most visitors choose a half-day safari:

  • Morning (from 6 am): cooler, softer light and active animals. This is usually the best time for leopards.
  • Afternoon (from about 2:30 pm): good light for photos as the sun drops, and a relaxed start to the day.
  • Full day: worth it in Yala or Wilpattu for keen wildlife photographers. Bring a packed lunch.

🛡️ Tips for a Better Safari

  1. Stay in the jeep at all times, except at the marked rest areas.
  2. Keep your voice low and switch off phone sounds. Animals stay longer when it is quiet.
  3. Do not ask the driver to rush or crowd an animal. Good drivers keep a respectful distance, and so should every jeep around them.
  4. Never feed wildlife, and take all rubbish back with you.
  5. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water and binoculars. A light scarf or cover helps with dust on dry days.
  6. Wear neutral colours such as khaki, green or brown.

🧭 Which Park Should You Choose?

  • First safari and hoping for a leopard? Choose Yala, ideally on a morning drive.
  • Travelling with children or short on time? Udawalawe gives the most reliable elephant sightings.
  • Visiting between July and October? Plan a safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla for the Gathering.
  • Prefer fewer people? Choose Wilpattu.

Many guests combine two: Udawalawe and Yala on our Wildlife Safari Tour, or Minneriya with the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle. Our Complete Sri Lanka Tour includes a Yala safari between the hill country and the south coast.
